In addition, we use generic health status measures such as the SF-36 and multi-attribute utility scales such as the EQ-5D. Observational studies and patient registries

Collecting health outcome data in comparative studies can be challenging e.g estimating the cost of an uncommon event or through adding requirements on data collection to an RCT. In these cases, observational studies and patient registries can generate supportive data to be used in combination with the RCT.
